How Do We Forgive

We pray that Our Father will forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. How do we forgive them?

Just say I forgive, or just forget what he or she did? Hardly seems appropriate. We were forgiven when we believed and believed in God, when we made the effort to change, when we were baptized and when we received the Holy Spirit. Let see what the Word says.

Ex. 23:4 ¶ “If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey wandering away, you shall surely return it to him.
Ex. 23:5 “If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying helpless under its load, you shall refrain from leaving it to him, you shall surely release it with him.

Prov. 19:11      A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger,
         And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.

Prov. 20:22      Do not say, “I will repay evil”;
         Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.

Prov. 24:17 ¶   Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
         And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;
Prov. 24:18      Or the LORD will see it and be displeased,
         And turn His anger away from him.

Prov. 24:29      Do not say, “Thus I shall do to him as he has done to me;
         I will render to the man according to his work.”

Lev. 19:18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

Luke 6:35 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

Matt. 5:10 ¶ “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matt. 5:11 ¶ “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Matt. 5:12 “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Matt. 5:39 “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
Matt. 5:40 “If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
Matt. 5:41 “Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
Matt. 5:42 “Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
Matt. 5:43 ¶ “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’
Matt. 5:44 “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Matt. 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Matt. 5:46 “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Matt. 5:47 “If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
Matt. 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Rom. 12:14 ¶ Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Rom. 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
Rom. 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.
Rom. 12:17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Rom. 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Rom. 12:19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord.
Rom. 12:20 “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.”
Rom. 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

1Th. 5:15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.

1Pet. 3:9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.

Gen. 45:8 “Now, therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Conclusion

Matt. 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
