Word Controls Us

Eventually, the sound represents a thing or person. Mama, or dada or something else. Little by little the How we understand what a word means determines how it controls what we think.

We learn words from our parents or guardians. Because our brains are made to learn language, a baby listens to words and makes those sounds. Baby puts words together to make sentences by imitation of the person speaking. The baby only understands what words mean by what he has been taught or experiences. Eventually, a child will learn word meanings from dictionaries, old and new, which may have different meanings due to the times or the orientation of the writers of the dictionary. OED, strictly according to the meanings found in writings.

Thereafter, words come from our minds. Denotation, connotation, history, context, levels (idiolect, familioelect, neighborhood  etc.), ruach (mind, character, heart, breath)

Words command, instruct, influence.

Words have individual meanings depending on experiences and places we have been, readings, people, knowledge, individuality and characteristics of language(s) using. We do not hear everything said or written; we see and hear what we know, study or examine (look carefully at). All people think according to these factors: emotions, deductions, logic and goal oriented.

In order to understand God’s Word, we need to absorb His Way of thinking and replace ours with His as far as we can. We also can

Total Immersion

A writing course in college said that a person could perfect his writing skills by, say, reading and copying all the works of a particular author either in fiction or non-fiction. A course at the seminary went from Genesis to Revelation by reading the various books very slowly and writing on the edge of the Bible comments about what was being read. Today making notes in margins of an “e-book Bible” might not work but could use a word application to parallel what was reading to make notes.

Deut. 17:19 “It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes,

Josh. 1:8 (NAS95S) “ This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may  be careful to do according to all that is written in it;  for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will  have success..
